I once stumbled on a plastic container on an island near Jackrabbit Island in Coastal Highway well into the 400 day mark, and it had a can of something at 90%. You simply can't see them until you smash the crate. These items technically aren't inside the crates, but are laying on the ground beneath them. This likely does NOT apply to items found by smashing open wooden crates. However if you find a plastic container outside in the snow that you had never searched, any items found inside are likely to be in decent condition. So returning to the first hypothetical, all candy bars sitting out in the open are likely no good anymore. Items in containers are created when you first search them, then start to decay. On the other hand if you spend 200 days in Coastal Highway, then visit Pleasant Valley for the first time on day 201, that candy bar could hypothetically be at 100%. So if you set foot in Pleasant Valley for two seconds, then turn around and return to Coastal Highway, then return to Pleasant Valley 200 days later, that candy bar is likely to be at 0%. For example, a candy bar on the dashboard of a car in Pleasant Valley is created the first time you enter the region. Items are only spawned the first time you enter a region or open a container. From my experience playing extremely long (500+) day runs, items in the game only start to decay after the game spawns them.
